What is vascular ultrasound?
Vascular ultrasound is a painless imaging test that uses sound waves to create real-time pictures of blood flow through your arteries and veins. A technologist glides a small handheld device over the skin, and the sound waves bounce off moving blood to show how — and how well — it's flowing. There are no needles, no radiation, and no dye, which makes it one of the safest diagnostic tests in medicine.
What can vascular ultrasound detect?
Vascular ultrasound can identify a wide range of artery and vein problems by showing where blood flow is blocked, narrowed, leaking, or pooling. It's the workhorse of vascular diagnosis, used to evaluate both arterial and venous conditions:
Artery (arterial) testing:
- Peripheral artery disease — including the ankle-brachial index (ABI), which compares blood pressure in the ankle and arm to detect reduced flow to the legs.
- Carotid artery disease — a carotid duplex scan of the neck checks for the narrowing that raises stroke risk.
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening — a quick scan of the aorta to look for a bulge before it causes problems.
- Surveillance after procedures — confirming that a stent, bypass, or other treatment is staying open over time.
Vein (venous) testing:
- Blood clots (DVT) — a venous duplex scan checks the deep veins of the legs for clots.
- Venous insufficiency and varicose veins — a reflux study maps which vein valves are failing, so treatment targets the true source of the problem.
- Vein mapping — assessing veins to plan dialysis access or a bypass.
Why does vascular ultrasound matter so much?
It matters because treating a vascular problem correctly depends entirely on understanding it first — and ultrasound provides that understanding without any risk to you. For veins especially, the visible problem on the surface is often not the whole story; ultrasound reveals what's happening underneath, so treatment addresses the actual cause rather than just the symptom. Put simply, it's how we replace guesswork with a clear picture.
What is a vascular ultrasound like?
A vascular ultrasound is quick, comfortable, and requires little or no preparation. You'll lie down while a technologist applies a warm gel to the skin and moves the ultrasound probe over the area being examined; you may hear a "whooshing" sound, which is your blood flow. Most studies take about 30 to 60 minutes, you feel nothing more than light pressure, and there's no recovery time — you return to normal activities immediately.
How soon will I know the results?
Because vascular ultrasound is performed in our office, your results can often be reviewed and discussed during the same visit.
